IMPROVING THE WELFARE OF NIGERIANS 1ST EDITION

IMPROVING WELFARE OF NIGERIANS

IMPROVING THE WELFARE OF NIGERIANS,The Welfare of citizens is most important and that is why Nigerian government should work on the

improvement of the welfare of Nigerians by working on the amount of freedom, healthcare, education,

infrastructure and facilities, social and economic security that Nigerians enjoy. This write up is written, such

that it will be understandable to all.

TACKLING POVERTY

Poverty simply means lacking basic things such as housing, clothing, food, basic healthcare, freedom and basic

education and characterized by low income and low consumption. Nigerian government should promote

opportunities, facilitate empowerments and enhance security to reduce poverty. The federal Government should

embark on reducing various forms of insecurities such as economic shocks, natural disaster, crop failures, ill-

health, violence and insurgence. Government should embark on projects that will bring employment

opportunities to the poor. Withdrawing money from circulation reduces consumption and investment by

Nigerians, government should instead, reorganize our consumptions and ensure that it is dominated by capital

goods and not consumer goods.

Nigeria had been characterized with low level of physical capital accumulation in terms of plant, machinery and equipment used in production of output and low human capital accumulation in terms of

education, skills and expertise embodied in labour force through education and training. Low capital

accumulation causes low productivity and poverty which is as a result of poverty, resulting from low income and low savings, hence low investment. Government should promote importation of machines that will be used in processing raw materials.

Government should control rapid population growth and enforce law against excessive child birth and enforce that all marriages should be legally documented to protect our women, but the religion of the man must be considered. Population growth might be of advantage at the aggregate level but at the household level, it increases poverty and exhausts of family resources and capability, hence increase in poverty nationally.

FLOOD CONTROL

Nigerian Government should set up bodies that will be in charge of marking lands that are good for residential purposes and those that are not good for residential purposes. Government should create platform whereby all

lands that will be allocated to infrastructure must be assessed before it is being approved to be used, sold or

bought for residential purposes as this will prevent loss of lives and properties in nearest future.

Government should vacate people who live on flood plains and create housing programmes because of

them and prohibit the act of anyone desiring to build house in flood plain regions by making law against

construction of buildings on flood plains. Government should put in place body that will be in charge of control

of solid and hazardous wastes and ensure that there is no dumping of refuse in drainages and in rivers.

Government should invest in purchasing vehicles that will be used to pack wastes to where it will be recycled.

Government should construct drainages and ensure release of water from dams is monitored so as to control flooding.

ENSURING TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS

Technological progress, which is improvement in art of production, which is as a result of combination of

research, invention, development and innovation, is very low in Nigeria. Government of Nigeria should give

roam for creation of knowledge through research and invention and also application of new knowledge to the

process of production through innovation. Nigerian export is dominated by primary commodities, government

should ensure that most of our primary products are processed before exported. Moreover, some goods are

underprovided and others overprovided, government should reorganize the productive sector

Nigeria is technologically backward, which is reflected in the high average cost of production and in

high labour output and capital output ratio, indicating low productivity. Poor capital is a major reason for not

scrapping of old technique and bringing in modern ones, as Nigeria is a low income or better say, a medium

income economy. Government should mobilize real savings, and ensure that credit and financial institutions are

effectively mobilizing savings, and also ensure that there are some investment on capital goods. Nigeria should

move away from exporting primary goods and ensure that no good is exported on processed, except few.

The ratio of industrial output to total output is low, if government can boost the industrial sector, the per

capital real income will increase. Nigerian government should put in place design and implementation of

industrial strategies, ensure equity in industrial progress between manufacturing and other productive sectors,

and ensure the appropriateness of technology being transferred, and the net cost of the transfer are well

calculated and minimized. Government should establish companies that will be processing woods to make

plywood, papers, planks and furniture, and also companies that will be processing agricultural products, such as

palm fruit and palm kernel into palm oil and palm kernel oil, cocoa into cocoa products, groundnut into

groundnut oil and so on. This will reduce cost of food and other products and increase welfare of Nigerians.

INVESTMENT IN HUMAN CAPITAL

Government should invest on health facilities, on –job training, institutional training and retraining, formally

organized education, adult education and so on, which will increase productivity as a result of reducing poor

health, illiteracy, fear of change or rejection of new knowledge. Government should strategize investment in

human resource development.

Nigerians usually demand for education because of employment opportunities and promotion, prestige,

self-worth or status. The private cost, incurred by individuals such as school fees, cost of books and other costs,

and social costs such as, building, equipment and teaching materials incurred by the society, vary from

individual to individuals and society to society. Individuals from poor background find it difficult to finance the

cost of schooling which makes them to perform poorly and societies with poor facilities have been unable to

impact on students leading to poor performance of students.

Therefore, government should always offer scholarship to both the brilliant and the poor students

because financial constraint is the major problem of most students that perform poorly in the primary,

secondary and higher institutions. Poverty widens inequalities between the poor students and rich the brilliant

ones.

ESTABLISHMENT OF SETTLEMENTS AROUND NIGERIAN BOARDER

Nigerian Government should establish new settlements around Nigerian boarder as this will help in

protecting and developing the borders. Government should ensure that all facilities and infrastructures are put in

place and also ensure that there is adequate security. The security will be protecting the border and the people at

the same time while the settlement can serve as economic ground where products can be assembled for export.

Industries can be located in these locations so that other neighbouring countries can easily have access to

Nigerian improved products or made in Nigeria products.

Nigerian government should boost import substitution by ensuring that there is ready market at home

and preserving products from foreign competition and hence, an attractive way of introducing local

entrepreneurship into the industrial sector.

ELECTRICITY

Nigerian government should ensure that the power sector is developed as the amount of energy

consumed by nations reflects their level of development. Nigeria should generate electricity according to nature

of the regions in the country, the south to be dominated by hydroelectric power, and in the north with solar,

wind and generation of electricity due to underground heat available in the north.

REDUCTION OF INEQUALITIES

Government should work on reduction between men and women by ensuring that women enjoy same

educational right, economic right, and constitutional right as men and ensure the reduction in inequalities

among different classes in the workforce. Government should initiate a progressive taxing system whereby as

income increases, tax rate increases and vice versa.

LABOUR EXPORT

Nigerian government should embark on labour export which is a deliberate action of government to export

labour to other countries. Some countries are in need of Nigerian as lectures and teachers of Nigerian languages

and other fields. Government should not be scared of brain-drain as there is ready replacement of such labour

that will be exported, as scholars are produced yearly and there will be remittance that will compensate any

form of brain drain.

TACKLING CORRUPTION

According to the World Bank, corruption is the abuse of public office for private gain, including bribery,

threats, and kickbacks. In Nigeria, corruption takes different forms; in the educational sector, begins from

teachers extorting pupils or students, taking them to his or her farm during school hours, and not impacting

knowledge in the students while they receive their salaries, in the ministries, both state and federal, there are a

lot of embezzlement, and in other sectors, there are existence of ghost workers and also receipt of multiple

salaries. Government should ensure putting in place measures that correct the anomalies in all sectors and probe

anyone probable both in the state or federal level and also ensure strict teaching guidelines in the educational

sector.

ENFORCEMENT OF LAWS ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS

Government should enforce better laws on environmental protection as this will help to protect the environment

for present and future generation. Government should make law against excessive deforestation and killing of

wild animals. Government should tax those companies that discharge waste materials into the water bodies and

air and also charge them to clean the environment.

IMPROVING THE WELFARE OF NIGERIAN LABOUR FORCE

Nigerian government should work on the improvement of the welfare workers, as improving the welfare

of the labour force is a catalyst to economic efficiency and development. Nigerian government should embark

on knowing and managing the size, age composition and changes of the labour force is important in economic

planning and development because it is only the members of the labour force that participate in productions of

goods and services. Nigerian government should put in place policies that will increase labour force

participation as it is the indicator that determine the size and composition of Nigeria’s human resource and

projections of the future supply of labour. Nigerian government should ensure that there is enabling

environment for labour force in the country, make laws that guide labour turnover which is the rate at which

labour can be replaced. Some firms sack or lay-off workers without paying them their previous wages and

salaries, some underpay, while some expose their workers to too many hours of work or dangers during work.
