Hot ICT Skills To Learn In Nigeria

IT also known as information Technology skills are abilities, knowledge and talent related to the use, development, design and management of technology. It is no longer new that most, if not all employers require all job applicants to have basic IT skills because most jobs now require the use the computer, mobile devices, and most especially software applications. Some employers will require prior knowledge or experience with specific applications which other employers may offer after job. Learning and understanding some of these IT skills will serve as an advantage and make you stand out among other job seekers when applying for jobs. However, with some of these skills you can also work as a freelancer from home on some freelancing platform like fiverr, upwork, freelancer etc. Interestingly, you can learn these skills on your own through YouTube video tutorials and through some relevant E-books which are usually for free or at a token. 1. Communication skill

Communication skills are those abilities that you use when given and receiving different kinds of information. For example, communicating ideas, feelings, though, or what is happening around you. Communication does not necessarily mean speaking only, it also includes good listening, observing, emphasizing and explaining. It is important to learn how to communicate fluently in face-to-face conversation, phone conversation, and digital conversation such as email and social media especially in business settings.Furthermore, communication helps us better understand people and situations. It helps us to build trust, respect, and confidence and create conditions for sharing creative ideas and solving problems.

2. Problem solving skill

If you really want to be singled out from a majority of job applicants, problem solving skills needs to be included in your Resume. When employers talk about discovering solutions to problems, they are often most often referring to the ability to scale through difficult times as well as business challenges which usually requires a high sense of intelligence to solve them. Organizations always value employees who can provide immediate solutions to any problem or challenge. It is a skill worth learning and mastering.

3. Leadership skill

Leadership skills are those skills you use when you are organizing other people to achieve a common goal and objective. Leadership or role playing skill is one the many skills that many employers value. Leadership skills are highly sought after by employers as they involve dealing with people in such a way as to motivate and build respect. This skill can also be learnt like any other skill. It also includes strategic thinking skills, communication, people management and communication. Therefore, if you are applying for a job that requires you to take a role as a leader such as a manager remember to include leadership skills among your soft skilsl in your curriculum vitae. 

4. Operating system knowledge

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages and controsl the way the computer works and runs other applications. Basically, it is an intermediary between the user and the computer. Without it installed on a computer, it rendered it useless. Although, there are various kinds of operating systems (MacOS, Windows, Linux, UNIX etc) and most organizations uses at least one of these operating systems. To acquire operating system knowledge, you can read eBook on basic functions of some operating system and their commands.

5. Office suite

An organization will find it very difficult to function without using an office suite because they are used in their day to day activities. The suite has a set of tools that almost functions at all organizations / workplace. If you are not confident about your office suite skills, you can brush them up before losing out on excellent job opportunities. The suite includes MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint etc.

6. Digital marketing skill

As we all know, today’s world is a digital world with nearly half the world online. Now that so many people are using the internet, businesses are now using digital to connect with people locally and around the world to promote their brands. It includes e-commerce, content marketing, email marketing etc. Hence, this skill is important for every job seeker. The good news is, you can acquire digital marketing skill for free at “Google digital skill for Africa”.

7. Web design/web development

Every organization or business needs a website to showcase their brand and this is the easiest skill to learn. It just requires commitment and determination. To get started, you need to understand some coding language which includes HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. Interestingly, if you find coding difficult, there are some platforms you can use to build a professional website without a single code such wordpress. You can on YouTube or apply for professional course on udemy, Edx, codecamp, coursera etc.

8. Troubleshooting

A computer can develop a mini  fault any time such as printers not working or probably the computer cannot connect to the internet, software crashes, unable to boot etc. This fault may be as a result of software or hardware problems. Troubleshooting is the process of identifying and fixing problems. It is easy to learn this skill by just watching YouTube videos on how to troubleshoot computer issues.
